For medical faculty in India, the National Medical Commission (NMC) does not maintain any official list of approved journals. Instead, NMC Gazette Notifications specify the criteria that publications must meet — including article type, journal indexing, and authorship requirements — to be considered valid for faculty appointment and promotion in medical colleges.
NMC Publication Criteria
For faculty appointments and promotions in medical colleges, the NMC mandates that research publications meet the following criteria:
Article Types
Original research papers, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, or case series.
Allowed Indexing Agencies
Journals must be indexed in Medline, PubMed Central, Science Citation Index, Citation Index Expanded, Embase, Scopus, or DOAJ.
Authorship Requirements
Faculty must be listed as one of the first three authors.
Promotion-Specific Requirements
- Assistant → Associate Professor: minimum of 2 publications while working as an Assistant Professor.
- Associate → Professor: minimum of 4 publications overall (at least 2 while working as an Associate Professor).
